News - July 2010

Below are extracts from the summer newsletter. Members of the society receive the full letter by email ahead of it appearing on this website.

Enjoy Summer

This is the last Newsletter before the summer break so may I wish all our members a good holiday season. As usual, there is a review of recent events, notice of upcoming events and activities followed by snippets from other organisations.

Crime Prevention Evening

The Society sponsored a presentation and discussion on Crime Prevention in May. The meeting attracted an audience of over 60 residents. The focus was on the nature of crime locally and the practical ways in which we can help protect our Parish as a whole and our own property.

Matt Deery, our Local Police Constable, and Daniel Lines, our Police Community Support Officer, both spoke and answered questions. Together they are the Safer Neighbourhood Team and work closely with the local Neighbourhood Watch run by Ron Snipp. Thanks to Mark Bartholomew who volunteered at the meeting to become a co-ordinator, much to Ron's delight.

Hog Roast

A total of 122 members and guests spent a great afternoon (20th June) at Highclere Stud by kind permission of John and Lady Carolyn Warren. The Stud sits in a wonderful valley with unspoilt views made even more glorious by the sunny weather. Jeremy Scott roasted the hog. Jill's food committee did us proud with canapés, puddings, cheese and other dishes. This year we enjoyed a three-piece band called Jambalaya who played during the afternoon.

Our thanks go to Ian and all the helpers who transported table, chairs and gazebos and erected them. They did such a grand job in setting the scene for this successful Hog Roast.

The Raffle run by Bernard and Marion raised a record £507 for Help for Heroes, the charity chosen at the last AGM. Thanks also to those committee members who donated prizes.

The final touch was a fly-past of the Red Arrows who swept down the valley looking magnificent against the blue sky. We are grateful to Lady Carolyn who took the opportunity offered by a conversation at Ascot to request that the Red Arrows fly over the Stud on their way back from an event at Oxford.

November 18th 7.30pm Highclere Village Hall - Let's get greener

This year's AGM will be followed at 8pm by a presentation and discussion on Green Issues by Highclere resident and environmental consultant Charlie Bennett.

Don't miss it, put the date in your diary!
