News: October 2012

Below are selected items from our September and October newsletters. Members of the society receive the full newsletter and other regular updates by email ahead of them appearing on this website

Thursday 29th November 2012 - AGM

The Society's very brief AGM will be held in the village hall on Thursday 29th November at 8.00pm. During the evening there will be a presentation by Glenn Peacey of Hants CC who will give an update on the faster Broadband programme and how it affects us! As always, there will be a free bar, so please come along and listen to what Mr Peacey, your committee and other HS members have to say! Everyone's views are welcome.

"Twinned with Downton Abbey" Yellow Road Signs

No doubt you have all seen the new writing on the yellow circles as you enter the village. Well, it remains a mystery to us as to who created these signs! The ITV series Downton Abbey has indeed brought some fame to our little village, so perhaps we should turn to the TV again and hire the services of Miss Marple or Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby to help us find the creator! On a serious note, this may spur the Council into action to do something about these redundant and ridiculous yellow circles!

Autumn Golf Day - Abandoned!

The Society's Autumn Golf Day was held (or half held!) on Monday 24th September. Ian Briggs reports "due to heavy rain and wind, the Golf Day was abandoned after 5 holes, so the bedraggled golfers made their way back to the clubhouse for coffee and an early lunch! It was decided that we would revisit Newbury and Crookham GC for our 2013 spring event." And we all hope for better weather for you!

Highclere Film Club

Thursday 27th September 2012 - "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"

Highclere Film Club will be having a themed food night with their showing of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy on Thursday 27th September 2012. An Indian buffet style supper will be served, so please book in advance to enable the caterers to gauge numbers by sending an email to highclerefilmclub*at* Doors open at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8.00pm.

The films for October are The Descendants starring George Clooney, who due to unforeseen circumstances, has to become a single parent to his troublesome daughters while having to come to terms with the devastating revelation that his wife was having an affair. This film will be shown on Thursday 11th October. And on Thursday 25th October, there will be a screening of The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe as a young lawyer assigned to travel to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorising the locals.

For films on Thursdays, doors open at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8.00pm. Advance notice for November, the Thursday films (which will be announced at a later date) will be shown on 8th and 22nd November.

The Members' Film for October will be shown on Sunday 28th October. This is a "Pot Luck" showing where everyone who attends is encouraged to bring, or recommend in advance, a film they consider worthy of a "special" showing. After a short discussion, over the food that is provided at these Sunday showings, the attendees choose a winner and settle down to watch it. Doors open at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm film start on Sundays.

Events at The Red House

Simon and his team at the The Highclere Red House would like to thank everybody who attended the Big Curry event at the pub last week. The event raised the very impressive sum of £2,315 for ABF the Soldiers Charity.

There are lots of events coming up in October at the pub, the first being a quiz night on Wednesday 17th October. The usual entry fee of £5.00 applies for a team of 4 and the quiz starts at 7.45pm. Nibbles will of course be served at half time! Please book your team in by calling the pub on 01635 255531.

There is a Red House Golf Day on Monday 22nd October at Donnington Valley Golf Course. The cost is £30 per person, which includes coffee and bacon bap at the Club, 18 holes of golf and supper at the Red House. Please speak to Simon on 01635 255531 for more information and to book your place.

On Saturday 27th October, there will be a Mexican party Night from 8.00pm till late. Tickets are £10 per person which includes a welcome drink on arrival and Mexican themed food. There will also be a four-piece Mexican Mariachi band to make it a party to remember!

And future events include a Go Karting night in Camberley on Monday 29th October and a game night (that's fur and feathers, not dominos and tiddly-winks) on Wednesday 14th November. More details of these events to follow. And, just a reminder that the Christmas menu (well, with less than 3 months to go 'til the "Big Day", we thought that the first mention of Christmas was just about acceptable - and be warned, it appears again later!) is now available.
