Highclere Society Spring Golf Day

This year’s spring golf tournament was held at Marlborough Golf Club on 7th April. It was a re-run of the abandoned match there last October. Twenty players turned up, the weather was wet and windy, but it wasn’t going to be cancelled again! The scores reflected the weather conditions.

The overall winner this year was Ben Briggs with 34 points, Mike Durkin also achieved 34 points, but Ben won on the count back, both very good efforts. Prizes also went to Peter Sharpe for the longest drive and Nick Haste for nearest the pin. Special prizes were awarded to Mike Durkin, James Hirst and Barry Wall.

The next Golf Society day will be in the autumn of 2014 – details to follow in future editions of this newsletter.

Nuisance Sales Calls to be avoided

Please read the following information received from a Highclere Society member who has asked for it to be included in this newsletter..

“Several weeks ago a woman rang me to sell the benefits of ‘daylight activated’ solar panels and said that I may qualify for free installation. I said I wasn’t interested but the following week I got a call from a man who developed this theme at length in a long harangue. Eventually I repeated that I wasn’t interested and hung up. I got an immediate repeat call with the vilest abuse that I have ever experienced for having hung up. Having served 24 years in the Army I was familiar with most of the profanity used but it, and the aggression, was still a shock to the system! I immediately phoned Hampshire Police and then an 0800 number at BT, both of whom were long on advice but (understandably) short on action they could take. Obviously the calling number was withheld. I advise people to avoid any similar sales calls like the plague. If they can talk like this they’re not to be trusted with a screwdriver let alone a solar panel installation.”
